Before retiring,Tom was involved in technical matters for over 30 years. He holds a Doctorate in Geophysics (UC Berkeley) and has served in various research, educational, and Information Technology positions for all of that time. He is a Extra class ham radio operator and enjoys working in amatuer television, packet, and satellite communications. He has also been interested in amatuer astronomy since a child. Tom has an interest in the arts and has attempted amatuer photography as well as writing prose to a small extent; some examples of which are in this Web site.

His wife, JoAnn, is a artist (oil, watercolor, and pencil) and has owned and managed art galleries, worked as a doctor's assistant, co-owned and managed a retail kitchen gadgetry shop, and worked at several other small businesses throughout her career. She has lived in South America for a number of years and speaks Spanish fluently. Her language skills helped both of us find the nearest cab station (5 blocks away) once when we were lost in downtown Mexico City.

Canyonlands National Park, Utah: Elephant Hill, Angel Arch, Confluence,Beef Basin, The Needles, Upheaval Dome : These are photos of Canyonlands National Park in SE Utah. These photos were taken during off-road camping trips within and outside of the park and span from the early 1960's to present day. Prior to the 1980's, the park had remained relatively undiscovered and was considered quite primitive. It would have been commonplace to be in the park and see no one else for days. Travel in the park was essentially unrestricted. Since then, many improvements have been put into place as well as limitations on where to travel by vehicle within the park boundaries. The park now experiences many visitors each year (often from other countries) and, at times, gets quite crowded. The photos in this gallery were taken with a variety of cameras: Nikon, Cannon, and Olympus are typical of the brands used. The photos date from the mid 1960's to present day. History: Stewart Udall served as Secretary of the Interior from 1961 to 1969 and during this time put into place four national parks, six national monuments, nine recreation areas, 20 historic sites and 56 wildlife refuges. According to some published accounts, Canyonlands National Park may be partly a response to a request to build a dam just below the confluence. Another reason is that Bates Wilson who served as superintendent of Arches National Monument from 1949 to 1964 advocated the creation of a National Park in this area and spent some time exploring the environment. On September 12, 1964, President Lyndon B. Johnson signed Public Law 88-590 establishing Canyonlands National Park. Because of his strong position on establishing the park, Bates is often referred to as "the father of Canyonlands". The park comprises about 530 square miles. Udall passed away on March 20, 2010. Bates passed away in 1983. Jackson Hole, Wyoming: Grand Tetons, Holly Lake, Hidden Falls : These are photos taken from various sightseeing and mountain climbing trips to the Grand Teton National Park and surrounding area ranging from the early 1960's to present day. They are not always in chronological order but represent a cross-section of the area around Jackson Hole although I do have a sequence of photos I took when I hiked to Jenny Lake over the snow in winter and a hike up to Holly Lake . For photos of specific trips to Jackson Hole particularly mountain climbing trips, they are listed separately. The Teton range is the result of reverse faulting running about 16 miles from north to south. The range is noted for its steep eastern face and gently eroded, elongated western side. The range is geologically relatively young compared to the surrounding area. Strictly speaking, the term "Jackson Hole" refers to the valley on which the Tetons form the western border. The term does not refer to the town of Jackson, Wyoming which lies south of the Tetons. The area can get quite cold in the winter and remains mild during the summer due to geographic effects. This area was known to Indians and fur trappers prior to permanent settlement. Jackson Hole was noted in the journals of John Coulter (Coulter Bay is named after him), a member of the Lewis and Clark expedition. His reports of Jackson Hole and Yellowstone were initially met with skepticism with the people of his times. However,once the area became known, tourism rapidly grew into the popularity the area sees today. From Dude Ranches to art galleries to homes to ski resorts, the area has seen huge growth in the number of people who live in and visit the area each year. Orange Cliffs, Cleopatra's Chair, Panorama Point, Flint Trail, Chocolate Drops, and the Maze, Utah : The Orange Cliffs region of southern Utah is bordered by Canyonlands National Park. It suffers extreme temperature changes from over 100 degrees in the summer to below zero in the winter. It is highly arid with a typical rainfall between 5 inches to 9 inches of rain per year. It is part of the Glen Canyon Recreation area and is very scenic in nature. This area is quite remote and visitors must use care in exploring anywhere in this part of Utah. My itinerary is to start from Hans Flat, go to Cleopatra's Chair and then camp at Panorama Point, the next day, go to the Maze Overlook via the Flint Trail and camp there that night, and retrace my route back to civilization the next day.

Grand Staircase Escalante National Monument, Utah: The Great Gallery, Hole-in-the-Rock, Calf Creek Falls : This area became a national monument in 1996 by then President Bill Clinton. The area is an fascinating place for hiking over sandstone rocks and through narrow streams and I refer the reader to the Wiki for further information as to geology and history of this area. Also included are photos of the Great Gallery in Horseshoe Canyon and Hole-in-the-Rock that were taken on the same trip.

Uinta Mts-LaMotte Peak, Utah : A high mountain range in northeastern Utah with some overlap into southern Wyoming. They are the highest mountain chain in the US that runs east to west. They are still considered part of the Rocky Mountains and range from 11,000 to 15,528 (King's Peak). Several blocks of rock in this area have undergone rotation. This area has also undergone extensive glaciation as many of the peaks and valleys indicate. These photos document a climb to LaMotte Peak in the Uintas. It has an altitude of 11,720 ft above sea level. Much of the area is designated as wilderness. What few roads exists typically lead to trail heads. The basic structure of the Uintas is Pre-Cambrian rock over 600 Million years old. There are many near-vertical faults in the area. Burr Trail, Wolverine Petrified Wood, Henry Mountains and Hite Marina, Utah : The Henry Mountains are located in southeastern Utah north of Lake Powell and extend for approximately 30 miles running north to south. They were named by John Wesley Powell for Joseph Henry, the first secretary of the Smithsonian Institution and are one of the last mountain ranges to be surveyed and named in the lower forty-eight states. At the core of these mountains lie igneous intrusions called laccoliths . The geology of these mountains is similar to that of the La Sals and Abajo Mountains to the east in Utah as they were made from upward intruding igneous rock and formed lacoliths. The area is home to a herd of free-roaming bison that were introduced to the area in 1963. Coal mines lie west of the Henry Mountains and uranium mines within the range were established during the uranium boom times in the 1950's. Petrified wood and coal deposits has been found in this area. The mountain range is generally divided into two groups: the northern group with Mt Ellen (11,522 ft), Mt Pennell (11,371 ft), and Mt Hilers (10,723 ft). Kodachrome Basin State Park and Grosvenor Arch, Utah : Kodachrome Basin is located about 20 miles southeast of Bryce Canyon National Park in Utah. The area is at an altitude of about 5800 feet above sea level and covers approximately 2240 acres. The area is well known for its sandstone pipes that stand many feet tall above the ground. Cozumel, Chitzen Itza : Cozumel is a world famous island off the coast of Mexico near Cuba. It is a favorite vacation spot for visitors from around the globe. The island is about 30 miles long and about 10 miles wide. It is Mexico's third largest island. Most of the town's population (about 77,000) lives in the town of San Miguel. We took a week long vacation in Cozumel one summer and took a one-day visit via plane to Chichén Itzá, a wonderful old Mayan ruin of considerable size. We also visited San Miguel one night to get a taste of what the locals did and it was party city! We ate, and looked, and bought some items and had a fantastic time.

Arches National Park, Utah: Delicate Arch, Landscape Arch : Arches National Park is in southeastern Utah near the town of Moab. The park has over 2000 sandstone arches in addition to a large variety of geological rock formations. The elevation of the park varies between 4000 to 5600 feet above sea level. The cause of these formations is erosion of rock being uplifted by underlying salt domes. The salt layer is several thousands of feet in thickness and was created by the evaporation of an ancient sea. People have been known to inhabit the park area for at least 10,000 years. Petroglyphs can not only be found in various areas of the park but in other areas surrounding the park boundary as well. Climbing on natural arches or bridges is prohibited. However, climbing other types of formations is closely regulated. Hiking trails allow visitors to view most areas of the park.

Big Bend National Park, Texas : Big Bend National Park is located in southwest Texas at the Texas/Mexico border. It covers approximately 1250 square miles and has a variety of plant types and geology. The park area includes historic buildings dating back to the 19th century and adbundant fossils. The southern park boundary forms a 220 mile long border between Texas and Mexico. Because of this, there are unusual constraints when administering and enforcing park rules, regulations, and policies. The climate in the park has hot summers and mild winters but temperatures do drop below freezing at times.

Capitol Reef, Utah : Capitol Reef was first established as a national park in 1971. The area is 100 miles long (North to South) but narrow and is located in south-central Utah. Capitol Reef is actually part of a much larger geologic formation called the Waterpocket Fold. Capital Reef was named after a series of white Sandstone domes resembling the United States Capital Building. The Waterpocket Fold is the largest monocline in North America and was created by the same plate tectonic forces (plate collision) that created the Rocky Mountains. The park is filled with canyons, cliffs, towers, domes, and arches. It is still an extremely rugged area, with few roads. Thousands of years ago, the Fremont Indians inhabited the area who would later be replaced by Pauites. This area was first explored by Franciscan Friars in 1775-1776 but turned away due to bad weather and difficult terrain. After the Civil War, the area was settled by the Mormons.

Shafer Trail, Deadhorse Point, Utah : The Shafer Trail is a rugged dirt road that decends 1400 feet down onto the plain below. Originally used to drive cattle down into the canyons, it was improved a bit during the uranium boom in southern Utah in the 1950's. It used to be quite primitive and required four-wheel drive to navigate but it is now well maintained and I've seen SUVs drive down it. It is located near the Dead Horse Point Overlook in Canyonlands. It probably began as an old Indian trail. At the bottom of the canyon, there is a turn-off for the White Rim Trail which is about 100 miles long and is regularly taken by mountain bikers and four-wheel drive enthusiasts.

Canyonlands National Park, Utah: The Joint Trail, Confluence : A log of one of many trips over the years into Canyonlands including a hike along the Joint Trail and a visit to the Confluence. The Needles area contains more than 60 miles of trail with many trails interconnecting to one another. The Joint Trail is one of these trails and is quite scenic. Note this area is quite primitive and water is almost non-existent.

Fisher Towers, Utah : Fisher Towers is a famous area of towers made from sandstone with a mud top. They are named after a miner who lived here in the 1880's. The nearest town is Moab, Utah about 16 miles to the southwest. Some of these towers range from 1000 to 2000 feet tall. They are accessible from Route 128, a road which parallels the Colorado River just north of Moab, Utah. The towers are known for photography and rock climbing.

San Rafael Swell, Goblin Valley, Shafer Trail, Utah : The San Rafael Swell is literally that: a broad anticline structure raised up relative to the surrounding territory and then eroded out. Due to the nature of the uplift, large blocks of sandstone have been tilted and, in some cases, even rotated. Some of the geology in this area can be difficult to interpret. The area is cut by Interstate 70, the only paved road in the area. This area is primitive with some gravel roads but has remarkable scenic beauty. Paintbrush Divide, Teton National Park, Wyoming : The Paintbrush Divide trail is one of the most traveled hikes in the Teton National Park. Telluride-Silverton, Colorado : Today, Telluride and Silverton are well-known ski resorts boasting fantastic skiing and resort hotels. But in the 1800's these towns and the surrounding area were booming silver mines in the San Juan Mountains of Colorado. After boom came bust and this area essentially became ghost towns. However, in recent history (post 1960's), these locations have become boom towns once again but for the recreational potential they provide. Devil's Tower National Monument, Wyoming : The Devil's Tower is an igneous intrusion located in northeastern Wyoming. The top is 1267 ft above the surrounding terrain. Some geologists think it could be the neck of an eroded volcano while others think it could have been an upwelling of molten rock that didn't quite reach the surface and later cooled. In either case, the surrounding landscape would have long ago eroded away. I was in this area for business and when I had some free time, I took a hike around the tower one July afternoon. It was a wonderful hike with comfortable temperatures. As I hiked along the trail, I heard and saw rock climbers about half way up the tower. The monument gets about 400000 visitors a year now of which about 1% attempt the climb to the top.

Jackson Hole, WY: Gros Ventre Slide Area : Across from the Grand Teton mountain range lies the Gros Ventre slide area. The landslide occurred on May 18, 1927 and 50 million cubic yards of sandstone,limestone,shale, and rock slide about one mile and was several hundred feet deep in places. The landslide formed a dam 2205 feet and nearly a half mile wide across the Gros Ventre river and created a lake above the dam. The town of Kelly, Wyoming was wiped out during the landslide and 6 people drowned. The slide area has been developed with a foot path and benches.

Glenn Canyon Dam, Arizona : The Glen Canyon Dam is located in northern Arizona and is in the form of a concrete arch that holds Lake Powell, the second largest artificial lake in the country extending well into Utah. This area has been used many times for location shots in several major films. The dam is named after Glen Canyon, a series of gorges which now lies beneath the water of Lake Powell. Lone Peak, Utah : Lone Peak lies southeast of Salt Lake City, Utah. It's altitude is 11253 ft. In the past several years, it has proven to be a very popular climb. There are several of us making the peak on this expedition. Although we have climbed Lone Peak in one day, this time we've established a base camp somewhat lower down for overnight stays. Hawaiian 9 Day Cruise & Solar Eclipse : JoAnn and I took a multi-day cruise excursion visiting the islands of the Hawaiian chain given by American Hawaii Cruises line. The ships sail in opposite cruising patterns calling at Nawiliwili, Kauai; Kahului, Maui; and Hilo and Kailua-Kona on the Big Island as well as Honolulu. Along the way, off the coast of Maui, our cruise ship, the USS Independence (in partner with a sister ship USS Constitution) went out into the Pacific a bit so we could have a look at a Solar Eclipse. Very spectacular! I had a 4 1/4 inch reflecting telescope along with me and included a few of the shots I took through the telescope of the eclipse in this gallery. Still adding photos.

Texas Bluebonnets 4/30/20163 : On the last day in April,2013 we took a scenic drive about 25 miles southward from Dallas to Ennis, TX. The Ennis area is famous for its Bluebonnets which appear typically from April 1st to April 30th. Unfortunately, the sky turned out to be completely overcast so we didn't have good sunlight for photos.
